Zorig Chusum: The Thirteen Traditional Crafts of Bhutan

An essential part of Bhutan’s cultural heritage are the thirteen traditional arts and crafts that have been practiced from time immemorial. The thirteen arts and crafts are categorized as follows:

  2. Tsha zo            Bamboo Work
  3. Shag zo            Wood Turning
  4. Lha zo              Painting
  5. Shing zo           Carpentry
  6. Do zo                Masonry
  7. Par zo              Carving
  8. Jim zo             Sculpting
  9. Lug zo              Casting
  10. Gar zo              Blacksmith
  11. Troe zo            Ornament Making/Goldsmith
  12. De zo                Paper Making
  13. Tshem zo         Tailoring and Embroidery

Two schools in Bhutan teach these traditional arts and crafts. You can get the chance to visit one in Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan. Other one is located in Trashiyangtse.
